Business owners often assume that one liability policy covers every type of claim, but general liability and professional liability protect against very different risks.
General liability (GL) insurance covers claims related to bodily injury, property damage, and personal or advertising injury that happen as a result of your business operations. A classic example is a customer slipping and falling in your store, or your work crew accidentally damaging a client’s property. GL is considered foundational coverage for nearly every business, regardless of industry.
Professional liability (PL), also known as errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, covers claims arising from mistakes, negligence, or failure to deliver services as promised. This type of coverage is critical for businesses that provide advice, expertise, or professional services, such as consultants, accountants, real estate agents, or designers. If a client claims your advice or work caused them a financial loss, professional liability is what responds, not general liability.
The key distinction: GL protects against physical harm or property damage, while PL protects against financial harm caused by professional mistakes or unmet expectations. Many businesses need both, since a single claim can sometimes touch on both types of exposure. Talk to your agent about which combination fits your specific business activities.
